growing practices
SOIL – A farmyard garden uses organic growing practices starting with the soil. Our proprietary blend of locally made compost and organic fertilizers gives your crops the nutritional balance they need for ultimate success. This practice eliminates the worry of having to improve the soil structure and existing contaminants.
WATER – Farmyard prefers using drip irrigation on automatic timers. This has a number of benefits for a food garden environment. Since the drip system delivers a small amount of water directly to the plant’s root system. There is no wasted water flowing between the crops, and helps to conserve natural resources.
SEEDS & SEEDLINGS – Consistent with growing locally, we purchase our seeds from a organic seed producer who provides top quality organic heirloom vegetable, fruit, and herb seeds. We offer a comprehensive collection of heirloom seeds and seedlings from which you can personalize your garden edibles. Each season we and our growers have season appropriate seedlings available for sale that are perfect for our environment in the desert Southwest. Please see our Farm Shop page for year round and seasonal offerings.
FERTILIZER – Our farmers will add only natural fertilizers to your garden. This gives your crops the nutrients they need for optimum growth. Whether we add fish emulsion, seaweed extract, or compost tea, these organic soil amendments benefit the soil and plants.
PEST CONTROL – At Farmyard, we understand what bugs you! Believe it or not, there are many beneficial insects visiting your garden. When needed, we only use organic forms of pest control to protect you from ingesting harsh chemical pesticides. If your garden has a pest problem, we can determine the most effective organic method, such as insecticidal soap, Neem oil, and pest deterring plants, to keep your garden healthy.
